‘Social’ Intelligence: Dress to Impress All the Way to Success, Part Three, The 'Must- Have Suits'

I shan’t waste your time with idle pseudo- funny jokes and seemingly profound discussions today as I just realised that it is sunny and pleasant outside and you would much rather have a cup of peppermint mocha than read an unnecessarily prolonged article.

Without further ado and back to last week’s topic (suits), I shall today focus, as promised, on the suits that a man must have in his wardrobe.

The Eighteen Must- Have Suits

Firstly, I’d like to point out that the selection below has been made by myself and includes a short description of the selected suits.

1) The Plain Black Suit

Two- button, single vent, tailored fit. Nothing pretentious; a very stylish suit that can be combined with a wide variety of shirts and ties. Can be worn on all formal occasions except for business meetings.

2) The Brown Slim Fit Suit

Two- button, double vent, slim fit. Very slick; can be worn at work and firm socials which are not that formal. Semi- formal suit, combine with beige, cream and light shirts and striped tie & hankie.

3) The Burgundy Suit

Single vent, Aim for a sharp black lapel and black buttons; a suit which is incredibly difficult to find but is a definite must when attending, say, a cocktail party. Always wear with a white shirt and black bowtie.

4) The Charcoal Suit

Two- button, suitable for the office and formal occasion. Difference between 1) and 4): the eye is used to black suits; black suits blend in with the crowd whilst charcoal ones stand out as the eye is often trying to make out the difference. Wear with light shirts and poke doted ties.

5) The Checked Pattern Suit

Double vent, loose fit, two buttons, to be worn at informal occasion, ideal for ‘smart casual’ outings. Very demanding when it comes to shirts- do NOT wear with striped shirts, sends people in a daze. Avoid ties or bowties, always use contrasting hankie.

6) The Cream Suit

Single vent, slim fit, aim for slightly darker than suit buttons. A lot of men are scared of wearing cream suits as they consider them rather feminine; quite shallow, really. The cream suit is very appealing to the eye, especially when combined with a slightly darker in tone shirt and a plain but intense dark colour tie and hankie. Wear at cocktail parties and on a formal night out.

7) The Navy/ Black Double- breasted Chalk Stripe Suit

Personal favourite and a must for informal business meetings. Go for an aggressive sharp lapel and no vent. For the best effect, combine with a white shirt and a bright red tie and hankie.

8) The Khaki Suit

Ideal for everyday wear, not as demanding as the above. Aim for slim fit and regular lapel, two or three buttons. Wear with blue tie and hankie.

9) The Light Blue Suit

A lot of people ignore this suit mainly because it does not fit in with their grey surroundings. Newsflash: it’s a summer suit. As the khaki suit, the above is an everyday suit, not be worn at formal occasions or at the office. Opt for three buttons, two vents and loose fit.

10) The Light Grey Suit

A classic suit to be worn on semi- formal occasions and/ or at work. Goes well with lilac and lighter shirts and striped tie and hankie. Always go for a tailored fit, two buttons and single vent.

11) The Linen Suit

‘Oh, my God, it’s too hot for a suit!’ No, it’s not, just get a linen suit. Two buttons, loose fit, double vent. Everyday summer suit as the light blue one above. Wear with light blue, white or lilac shirts, avoid ties or bowties but not the hankie.

12) The Navy Blue Chalk Stripe Suit

The ideal suit for formal business meetings and presentation; it simply draws a big deal of the attention to you. A very bold suit pattern that often impresses those around you. Two button, slim fit, single vent, go for a white shirt and a patterned tie and hankie (NEVER striped).

13) The Navy Suit

Business suit, can be worn to work. Always tailored fit, two buttons, single vent and brown shoes. White shirt and dark but bright patterned tie and hankie (tones of red).

14) The Oval- lapel Tuxedo

Incredibly stylish and bold, many people go for a much more aggressive lapel. Always wear with a tie and a matching silk scarf and hankie. Needless to say that you are only to wear that on very formal occasions.

15) The Sharp- lapel Tuxedo

A classic. Wear with a white shirt, black bowtie and white hankie, one button only, no or single vent. As the above, only wear on ‘black tie’ occasions.

16) The Sharkskin Suit

Business suit, slim fit, two buttons, single vent. This suit shows people that you mean business and are quite serious and ruthless in what you do. Go for a light shirt and a bright patterned tie and hankie (striped).

17) The Tweed Suit

Vintage, stylish, informal everyday suit. Go for a darker colour, wear with light shirts and darker plain ties and hankies. To be worn and work or on formal occasions.

18) The Three- Piece Suit

I’d personally go for a black/ navy chalk stripe suit with an aggressive sharpened lapel, three buttons, single vent, three- button vest (no vent), white shirt and bright tie and hankie (red). Corporate suit to be work to very formal business meetings, presentations, etc. Bold suit, shows those around you that you are in charge of what is happening.

Well, that was all for today; I do hope that you will find the above useful. Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to email me on ad.peychev@gmail.com

Stay tuned for next week when I will be discussing how to match your suit to your body type without thinking to yourself...

To Hell With It!!!!
