If
you are reading this, I have managed to make it into 2013 and am currently
recovering from 2012.
You
are probably thinking that, by the above, I mean that I am lying down somewhere,
recovering from a massive hangover.
Well
I don’t and I'm not.
I
haven't got a hangover; neither have I ever experienced one.
I
am, however, quite certain that many of you have been struggling with one
either today or at some point in their lives. That is why, in the spirit of the
New Year, I should like to share several very dear to me golden nuggets of
information which will, hopefully, aid you in alleviating your pain and suffering.
Without
further ado or headaches, here goes:
Don’t
drink
Ok,
you saw that one coming. Simple as it may sound, it does make sense, does it
not?
I
mean, if you cannot handle your drinking, just don’t do it because overdrinking
often tends to lead to your feeling horrible, exhausted and somewhat useless
for two/ three days.
Another
quite simple option is to control your drinking; that’s what I tend to do.
Whenever you start getting dizzy or talking nonsense, simply stop drinking for,
say, an hour so that your body can recover before starting to drink again.
Have
a permanent headache
That’s
my ultimate cure and the reason why I have never experienced and will never
experience a hangover headache. But, surely, that’s a bit extreme; moving on.
Drink
water
Yes,
water. Not tomato juice, not an Earl Gray, not coffee; WATER.
Drinking alcohol
causes dehydration which is often the main reason for the headaches.
Drinking a
healthy amount of water usually fixes that up.
Have
some gherkins
Mmmm,
right?
Your
body needs vitamins and salt more than ever; why not indulge in some lovely pickled
gherkins?
Further
to the above, the somewhat sour taste of gherkins wakes you up and makes you
want to eat something decent like...
Fruit
and Veg
I
am quite aware that you were hoping for me to say ‘rib-eye or sirloin steak’.
Going back to the vitamins, however, it would be much better for your body to
get those of fresh fruit and veg and not pill supplements.
Olive
oil, milk and nuts
Those
ones you need to have BEFORE starting to drink as the vitamin B and E as well
as the proteins help the body deal with the alcohol in your system more quickly
and efficiently.
Peppermint
tea
My
personal favourite.
Even
though I don’t get the headaches, I still have the horrible bloated feeling in
my stomach which is quite often accompanied with an utter loss of appetite.
Peppermint
tea helps relieve tension and bloating in the stomach and speeds up
detoxification.
And
it tastes nice; especially with dark rum. (I am, naturally, kidding.)
Have
a cold shower
To
wake up and remind yourself that you are never drinking that much again because
you really do not like cold showers.
And
it also levels up the temperature in your body. But the above sounds way
cooler.
Take
a walk
The
process of detoxification takes time and requires movement.
Also,
a gentle jog feels quite pleasant; it does make you feel more useful and helps
you forget about how much you drank last night.
Work
out
Do
a minor full- body workout; not your usual weights (because if you do the
usual, you will soon realise that you feel weaker than...well, a weakling...).
Working-
out improves the flow of oxygen in the body which makes you feel alive,
refreshed and ready for another set of shots (only in theory, of course....).
All
of the above seem quite straightforward and common- sense but I can guarantee
that only a few people do any of those.
Indeed,
most people would prefer to lie in bed, watch a movie or ten, mellow out and
let their body do all the work.
That
is, of course, perfectly fine if you like wasting your time and slacking off.
I
don’t; and, since time is money, neither should you.
